Common Uses:

Imodium controls symptoms of diarrhea, including Traveler's Diarrhea. It works by slowing the activity of the intestines and affecting the movement of water and chemicals through the bowel. It can be purchased over the counter in liquid and capsule form under the brand name Imodium A-D.

How to use:

Do not take more than the prescribed dose of Imodium.
Imodium may cause dryness of the mouth. Sucking on a hard candy or chewing gum can help relieve the problem.

Warning and Precautions:

If you suffer from a liver condition, have a fever, or have mucus in the stool, check with your doctor before using Imodium.
Too much Imodium may cause drowsiness and/or dizziness. You should exercise extra caution while driving or performing tasks requiring mental alertness.
Dehydration can be a problem when you have diarrhea. It is important that you drink plenty of fluids while taking Imodium.
Use special caution when giving Imodium to a young child. Response to the drug can be unpredictable.

Important safety information:

• Imodium may cause drowsiness, dizziness, or tiredness. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use Imodium with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it.
• Do not take more than the recommended dose or use for longer than 48 hours without checking with your doctor.
• If your diarrhea does not get better within 48 hours or if it gets worse, contact your doctor.
• If you develop a fever, stomach bloating or swelling, or blood in your stools, contact your doctor.
• Imodium is used to treat the symptoms of diarrhea, but will not treat the condition causing the diarrhea. Check with your doctor if you have any questions or concerns about the cause of your diarrhea.
• Caution is advised when using Imodium in CHILDREN; they may be more sensitive to its effects, especially dehydration.
• Do not use Imodium in CHILDREN younger than 2 years old; safety and effectiveness in these children have not been confirmed.
• PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Imodium while you are pregnant. Imodium is found in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Imodium .

Side Effects:

Any of the medicine can cause side effects. If the side effects occur seek medical attention or consult with your doctor for more information. Anyway such common side effects may bother you:  Abdominal distention, abdominal pain or discomfort, allergic reactions, including skin rash, constipation, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, nausea and vomiting, tiredness.

 
Overdose:

Almost any medicine taking in excess doses without consultation with your doctor can cause an overdose.

Missed Dose:

If your doctor gave you strict instructions not to miss dose and if you missed one take the missed dose as soon as you remembered. If it is time for your next dose, skip it and continue taking you medicine regularly. Do not double the medicine. It can cause severe side effects.

Do not use this medicine:

if you have any allergic reaction to any component of this medicine or if you are taking a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor (eg, acetazolamide)

Storage conditions:

Imodium should be kept away from heat, direct light, water, moisture at a room temperature (approximately 23 degrees C ). The medicine should be kept in a place unreachable for children.
